Hemingway in the Rocky Mountain West December 3rd Boulder Bookstore

If you’re in Boulder, Best Chance Media publisher Alan O’Hashi will read from his latest book, “What the Morning Brings,” on Thursday, December 3rd, at the Boulder Bookstore at 6:30 p.m. You can purchase the book ahead of time.

What happens when Ernest Hemingway’s literary world collides with Boulder, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1968?

He’ll explore Hemingway and the American West at the Boulder Book Store (1107 Pearl St, Boulder, CO 80302) during a presentation about my adaptation of “The Sun Also Rises.”

His presentation traces the Nobel Prize-winning author’s connections from Wyoming and Montana to Idaho, where Hemingway spent his final years. The presentation explores how the West’s landscape, culture, and contradictions intersected with Hemingway’s life and literary imagination.

Alan’s research uncovered an unexpected connection to Colorado and another famously unconventional American writer.

After Hemingway died in 1961, journalist Hunter S. Thompson traveled from Colorado to Ketchum, Idaho, where Hemingway had lived. Thompson absconded with an elk rack from the Hemingway property. Years later, Thompson’s widow, Anita, returned the memento to the Hemingway estate.

It’s an unusual footnote in the story of two writers whose lives and legends became intertwined with the American West.

O’Hashi’s adaptation reimagines Hemingway’s landmark novel “The Sun Also Rises,” in the public domain since 2022. I explore how the lost generation’s questions might resonate with a new generation confronting a fractured America.

He transplants Hemingway’s post-World War I themes of disillusionment from Paris bars to the Vietnam War era and the search for meaning in Boulder, Colorado, during 1968, a year of political upheaval, antiwar protests, and cultural change.

The story reimagines the bullrings of Pamplona, Spain, by moving from University Hill in Boulder to a bull-riding chute at the Wild Prairie Stampede in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

The December 3rd event combines literary history, Western lore, and a look at the creative choices behind What the Morning Brings. Readers will hear how Hemingway’s legacy inspired me to bring a classic literary sensibility to distinctly Colorado and Wyoming settings.
